City of Rochester Municipal Website
Optimizing a 12+ year old city website for the modern age
The City of Rochester, NY is a diverse, vibrant metro of over 200,000 residents, known for its rich history, culture, and innovation. The 3rd largest city in New York, Rochester is rated as one of the best places to live in the state for its low cost of living and welcoming community. Yet as the city modernizes, its 12+ year old municipal website has been left behind. The current City of Rochester website hosts numerous resources for residents, businesses, and visitors alike, but an antiquated design, poor information architecture, and frustrating user experience prevent many from finding them. Let’s change that! :)

Project Goal Create a modern, clean design that organizes a large amount of information in an engaging, intuitive, and delightful manner. Additional focus on personalization, inspiring and connecting users with the many resources available to them in the city.
Takeaways This redesign of the City of Rochester website emphasizes the city’s energetic and innovative spirit while modernizing the use of Rochester’s current branding. The city’s current color palette is used more cohesively, with new exploration into texture and layered gradient elements. Additionally, geometric and organic shapes combine to reflect the city’s simultaneous natural beauty and man-made marvels. I achieved my goals of creating strong hierarchy, clear navigation, and an optimized bill payment user flow while making a site reflective of the city’s community that is easy and fun to use.
